Welcome to the 36th ISSC, the premier international conference on system safety. 

The theme for ISSC 2018 is “System Safety: Delivering Safety Through Design". The conference technical program is focused on training and educating new System Safety Engineers and Engineers in other disciplines who want to learn System Safety fundamentals. The training is endorsed by the International System Safety Society and a certificate of completion will be provided. The Technical Program will also include tutorials, and panels at an intermediate and advanced level. Technical paper sessions will include a variety of subjects such as: general system safety engineering, human factors, accident and incident investigation, prevention through design, ground transportation system safety (highway and rail), nuclear power and nuclear weapons, healthcare, medical devices and system safety applications in construction. Training sessions can also be provided by sponsors at specific ISSS/ISSC sponsorship levels using their products with rooms being provided by the ISSC.

We want you to share your knowledge and we invite you to participate. Please consider one of several types of technical presentations (listed below) on any process, method, or technique that you believe contributes to the goals and objectives of system safety. This interdisciplinary conference will bring practitioners and the foremost thinkers of system safety disciplines together for an exchange of ideas, knowledge and experience. There will be contributions from many different industries: automotive, aviation, defense, healthcare, oil and gas, electronics, utilities, rail, robotics, unmanned air and ground vehicles, and other transportation systems.

The Conference is accepting five types of presentation proposals:

Tutorials - Educational presentations conducted in 1.5 hour time slots. Tutorials may be 1.5 hours, 3 hours (1/2 day), 6 hours (1 full day) or 12 hours (2 full days) in length and are delivered by one or more instructors. They are intended to offer practical information from the “mainstream” of System Safety practice. Tutorial topics may be at various levels: basic, intermediate, or advanced. Most tutorials will be eligible for CEU credits. In support of the 36th ISSC theme, the conference is particularly interested in top-quality tutorials that will engage and educate attendees.

Technical Papers – These papers are compositions of generally between six and not more than twelve pages written by one or more authors, dealing with a subject related to system safety. Technical papers will be reviewed by the conference technical committee, and if accepted, will be published in the conference proceedings. The author will give a half hour presentation based on the paper (with ten minutes for questions) Initial selection of papers is based upon review of a submitted abstract of 100-200 words. Specific paper formatting instructions will be posted on the conference website.

Panels/Roundtables -  Discussion-oriented forums in which either a series of related presentations are delivered by a small number of experts (panelists), or a general topic is discussed somewhat informally by any or all participants. Discussions are led by a facilitator and are normally 1.5 hours in length. The organizer of the panel/roundtable must provide a recorder for the session. The recorder will provide a synopsis of the panel discussion to the ISSC.

Posters -  We will have a technical poster session on the afternoon/evening of Tuesday August 14th as part of our offsite special event in partnership with the Western OSHA Education Center and Arizona State University. Initial selection of posters is based upon review of a submitted abstract of 100-200 words. Specific poster formatting instructions will be posted on the conference website.
You MUST be onsite at the event on August 14th to present your poster. Additionally, you will be required to be registered for the conference.

Multimedia Competition Presentation - The ISSC is accepting multimedia presentations up to 10 minutes in length (1 to 3 minutes preferred) that illustrate the use of this medium to better communicate the value of system safety. Presentations must be stand alone, reflect positive value (no graphical results of accidents), and demonstrate some aspect of system safety that is benefitted by using graphical media.

April 18, 2018 – Abstract submissions for Technical Papers/Posters; Abstract proposals for Panels/Roundtables, Tutorials and the Multimedia Competition. Acceptance decisions will be given within two weeks of abstract submission by the author.
May 25, 2018 – Draft paper/poster submission
July 6, 2018 – Final paper submission/draft tutorial slides
July 13, 2018 – Draft presentation slides for papers
July 27, 2018 – Final presentation slides (papers and tutorials) and posters
